Economics has always played a key role in research and teaching at the University of Göttingen, ever since it was founded in 1737.
Today, the Faculty of Business and Economics is one of the largest in Germany, with about 3,800 enrolled students, more than 30 professors and assistant professors, and 6 honorary professors. In addition, international researchers and scholars are regularly hosted by the Faculty. The Faculty also boasts a large research staff of around 200 research assistants and around 40 postdocs as well as about 50 people who provide administrative support.
Excellent Research with Impact
The diverse research fields of the faculty overlap in three key areas: Compliance and Governance, Marketing and Consumer Science and Global Change and Development. These research areas transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. In doing so, these research areas help foster interdisciplinary collaboration across all the subject areas including business economics, information systems, economic and social history, statistics and econometrics.

Academic Programmes That Make a Difference
The Faculty of Business and Economics offers a of academic programmes that prepare students for professional success. At the bachelor's level, students can select from business administration, economics, sustainable development studies, business information systems and human resources. At the master's level, programmes range from key areas such as business administration and economics to a more specialized education in information systems, business and human resources, applied statistics, as well as economic and social history. In total, the Faculty offers six bachelor degree programmes (with one being a so-called two-subject programme), and eight master degree programmes.

Structured Doctoral Programmes
The Faculty of Business and Economics offers a structured doctoral programme which is comprised of a structured programme of study, a thesis committee, and regular review of progress on the doctoral requirements. The objective of the doctoral programme is to prepare students for a successful career in research and teaching as well as in non-academic professions. It is captured under the umbrella of the Göttingen Graduate School of Social Sciences (GGG). The GGG spans and connects five graduate programmes and faculties in law, social sciences, and economic sciences. The granting of doctoral degrees is however autonomous to each faculty, therefore, doctoral candidates in economic sciences receive the title, Dr. rer. pol.

Truly International Focus
The University of Göttingen is a cosmopolitan university which values cultural diversity as an important resource for research and teaching. As such, it is a member of international university networks such as the Coimbra-Gruppe (Coimbra Group), which is a network of traditional and renowned higher education institutions in Europe. The network was founded in 1987 to promote the exchange of students and teachers. In 2008, the Coimbra Group founded the U4Society Network. This network is a strategic partnership among the following universities: Ghent (Belgium), Groningen (Netherlands), Uppsala (Sweden), Tartu (Estonia) and Göttingen.
Since 2020, the University of Göttingen has also been a member of the ENLIGHT university network. ENLIGHT brings together nine comprehensive, research-intensive universities, which share a deep commitment to their social responsibility and a readiness to respond to the threats to our quality of life. The network focuses on tackling five global challenges: climate change, health and well-being, social inequality, the digital revolution and energy and circularity.
The Faculty of Business and Economics is actively involved in the strategic networks of the university. The goal is to expand departmental cooperation through joint workshops, summer schools, and student and faculty exchange programmes.
