Ecology at Göttingen placed first in Germany by Shanghai Ranking

In the 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, Ecology at the University of Göttingen is in first place in Germany again. The ranking also places Agricultural Sciences (including Forestry) in second place in Germany. Earth Sciences, Statistics and Human Biology have made it into the top ten nationwide. In the world, Göttingen's Ecology is in 25th place, whilst Agricultural Sciences come 38th. 

A total of 57 disciplines were assessed. The selection is limited to disciplines in the natural sciences, life sciences, medical sciences, social sciences, and engineering. The classifications do not correspond exactly to subjects at the University of Göttingen. For the assessment in the field of Ecology, publications from various disciplines were analysed. Humanities subjects are not included in the ranking.

In addition to a comparison of the top 1,000 universities worldwide, the Shanghai Ranking has listed a ranking of individual subjects since 2009. The indicators used for the ranking are publications, citations, international collaboration on publications, and journal quality.
