Doctorate

Doctoral studies in mathematics

There are excellent and wide-ranging doctoral opportunities in mathematics at Göttingen. Anyone who wishes to pursue a doctorate in mathematics after completing their studies should first contact a potential supervisor. Information about the various research areas and their representatives can be found under the heading Research. Two additional individuals with doctoral degrees are then brought in to serve as advisors, and the advisory committee thus formed receives regular reports on the progress made during the doctoral program, but also on any setbacks, for which counseling services are then available.

The doctoral program generally lasts three years and is part of the Mathematical Sciences (PhD) doctoral program. This is a faculty program of the Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS). Doctoral students are enrolled at the University of Göttingen for the entire duration of their doctoral studies.

Further information can be found on the information pages of the Student Office.

NFORMATION ON SUBMITTING YOUR DISSERTATION

Since the summer semester of 2021, dissertations have been submitted using a digital process implemented via the university's LUCOM system.

If you plan to submit your dissertation to our faculty in the foreseeable future, please contact the Dean's Office at least 6 to 7 weeks in advance. You will then receive detailed information about which documents are required, how the process works, and how you can obtain admission to the defense. Please also note the important information in the official GAUSS checklist Countdown to the doctoral degree.
